About the LabStudents in grades 3-5 visit the lab weekly for a half hour of instruction. During this time, students work with their classroom teacher and technology instructor in whole groups, small groups, or individually to master basic computer skills and learn about digital citizenship. Students use Web 2.0 tools to create projects directly related to the Common Core Curriculum and in line with ISTE standards. We also explore computer coding and programming in order to introduce more children to the area of Computer Science.
The brief instruction time in the lab is balanced by students having 24/7 access to the lab website. How-to videos are posted to the site so that students who were absent can view or students can review parts they did not understand in class. In addition, the lab instructor works collaboratively with grade-level teachers to create innovative technology lessons that teachers can expand upon outside of the lab. Classroom teachers have access to iPads and Chromebooks in the classroom to extend lessons and integrate technology across curriculum. Students are offered many ways to share their work throughout the year through posting projects to the computer lab website for others to view, as well as presenting them to their peers. Using Google Drive, each student also keeps a personal digital portfolio where they can upload their digital work. Beginning in 3rd grade, students are taught how to build and maintain their portfolio so that they can continue to independently preserve their digital work and track their learning progress all the way through 12th grade. The computer lab is an exciting place for our students to learn, share, and create with one another! We believe the lab is the perfect place for our Legacy lions to lead, explore, and succeed beyond the classroom! |
I love working with the students in the lab. I get to witness real-time learning as they figure out new skills. " |
